Pinguy OS. A Quick Review. Linux.

Pinguy OS is an out of the box OS for everyone. This OS is for people that have never used Linux before or for people that just want an out of the box working OS without doing all the tweaks and enhancements which everyone seems to do when installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu or some other Linux Distro.

A few days ago I downloaded Pinguy OS so I could take it for a test run on my Acer notebook.

Acer TravelMate 5740G-434G50Mn Notebook Specs.

  • Processor = Intel Core i5 430M (2.26GHz, 3MB L3 Cache )
  • Display = 15.6`` HD LED LCD
  • Hard Drive = 500GB HDD
  • Memory = 4GB DDR3
  • Optical Drive = DVD Super Multi DL Dive
  • Audio = Integrated HD Audio
  • Others = Integrated ATI Radeon HD 5470 512MB Graphics With VGA/ HDMI Out Port, Wireless LAN (b/g/n) , 10/100/1000 LAN, Multi Card Reader, Crystall Eye WebCam, 3 x USB ports.

I use UNetbootin to burn the ISO to a USB stick. Once that was done, just plug into a USB slot, boot the notebook and select which device you want to boot from.

Pinguy OS loads very quickly from the USB stick and Conky loads from boot to be present on the right hand side of the screen giving all the various read outs.

Dock also loads and is across the bottom of the screen.

Up in the top right hand corner of the screen are a number of icons, one being for wireless. It is as simple as typing in the pass word for the secure wireless network and you are surfing the Net.

Now, remember Pinguy OS is running from a USB stick and no changes will be made to your hard drive.

Pinguy OS comes with Libre Office installed.

Pinguy OS has a number of apps installed right out of the box which will allow you to be up and running fast.

The only major short fall I can see is that GIMP is not installed by default.

The best way is to give Pinguy OS a run yourself. As the head line says a quick review. Below are the links for the Pinguy OS website and forum which will answer most of your questions.
